‘Statio Tianhe’

The landing site of the Chang’e-4 lunar probe has been named “Statio Tianhe” after the spacecraft made the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon last month.

Together with three nearby impact craters and one hill, the name was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), Liu Jizhong, director of the China Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), said at a joint press conference.

Vocational education

China has vowed to cultivate more quality laborers and skilled workers by reforming its vocational education systems, according to a plan for implementing the reform recently issued by the State Council.

Vocational education and training systems will be reformed to match with science and technology development trends and market demands, and to promote economic modernization* and higher quality employment, the official documents note.

Cancer cases

The country saw its cancer incidence rising at an annual rate of 3.9 percent for over 10 years in a row, with more than 220 billion yuan (US$32.46 billion) of cancer-related medical expenses each year, according to data collected up to 2015.

The country has set up 20 provincial-level cancer centers in a bid to improve the prevention and treatment of cancer, and its cancer registry has covered 438 million patients, said China’s latest cancer epidemic report released by the National Cancer Center. Nearly 3.93 million cases were discovered in 2015, meaning that over 10,000 people were diagnosed with cancer every day, according to data of more than 300 million patients collected by cancer registries nationwide, the report said.

Smart windows

Scientists have developed a large-scale transparent smart window that can change light intensity while effectively capturing the particulate* matter in smog, said a study published on Saturday in the journal iScience.

The study described a simple solution-based process to fabricate large-area flexible transparent windows with Ag-nylon electrodes for high-efficiency PM2.5 capture.
