2nd youth reading base unveiled
    2019-03-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The second Shenzhen Library Youth Reading Base was unveiled at Second Senior High School, Shenzhen on March 8, providing students of the school a new reading space as well as marking the further promotion of reading bases co-built between Shenzhen Library and schools. It is a new model for promoting citywide reading.

Zhang Yan, director of Shenzhen Library, said during his speech that reading plays a very key role in the growth of a person, especially for young people. Reading influences their future career, the formation of their habits as well as their way of thinking.

Shenzhen Library launched the construction plan for a youth reading base last year, planning to build a long-term cooperation mechanism with schools. The first youth reading base was set up at the Senior High School Department of Shenzhen Experimental School.

The base will set up a special bookshelf of classic books, carry out reading activities on a semi-regular basis, and track the reading record of students. It aims at providing intelligent support to the healthy growth and learning of students by facilitating the sharing of quality culture resources.

Shenzhen Library has been paying special attention to youth readers for a long time. It has carried out an array of reading promotion activities with unique themes and rich content. Starting 2014, the city library recommends 30 classic books every year for 10 years, the books of which are reviewed by experts and scholars across the country.

The list of 30 books this year has been confirmed at an expert review seminar was and the list will be released to the public on April 23, World Book and Copyright Day.

Besides, the city and district libraries have released the student encouragement card for primary and secondary school students. Students of the city under the age of 18 can apply for the card without charge and deposit, and use it to access all the literature resources of all the member libraries of “City of Libraries.”

The student encouragement card records the reading tracks of each student, forming a reading map. Through big data analysis, they can learn about the reading habits of the students and carry out corresponding reading activities and reading guidance.
