Persistence is key to success

With people’s keen anticipation comes the year 2019. The New Year is not only the beginning of a new period of time, but also a perfect time for people to plan for the whole year. Most of us could compile formidable lists of “dos” and “don’ts” at the beginning of the New Year to show how ambitious we are. However, past experiences have taught us that many of the resolutions are not made for the simple reason that we are not persistent enough to carry out what we’ve planned.

Persistence is a quality we all need if we want to make an achievement. As an old saying goes, “Constant dripping wears away a stone.” This finely shows the importance of persistence. Even if our effort is as small as a drop of water, we can achieve our goal as long as we keep trying persistently. The key point is how persistent we can be. Many great people succeed not because they are smart, but because they are persistent in what they’ve chosen. Faraday, for instance, spent 10 years discovering electromagnetic induction. If I had been persistent like him, nothing would have shaken my resolution to read for 20 minutes every night before going to sleep last year.

Realizing this, I have decided to be more persistent this year to make a change. I decide to start with a modest ambition — to memorize 10 vocabulary words every day. In the past three weeks, every morning, after arriving at the classroom, the so-called self-discipline supervised me to take out my vocabulary book and to learn the words by heart. This is a good beginning, and I hope that this year I won’t fail my New Year resolution again.
