‘Roma’ gets release on Chinese mainland
    2019-03-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FOLLOWING “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” another Oscar-winning film is coming to the Chinese mainland soon. “Roma,” directed by Alfonso Cuaron, has been confirmed to release on the Chinese mainland through National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas. The release date is yet to be announced.

Written by Cuaron, the film won three awards for Best Director, Best Foreign Picture and Best Cinematography at the 91st Academy Awards. Set in 1970 and 1971, the semi-autobiographical movie takes on Cuaron’s upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. It stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira and follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family.

The film had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on Aug. 30 last year, where it won the Golden Lion. The film received universal acclaim, with particular praise given to Cuaron’s screenplay, direction and cinematography, as well as Aparicio’s and de Tavira’s performances. It also won Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Golden Globe Awards.

National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas is an initiative run by the government-supported China Film Archive and a consortium of commercial theater chains. The alliance was formed in 2016 as an effort to cultivate art cinema in China by reserving screens for prestige titles within the country’s scores of multiplexes.

Some of the most successful imported titles to release through the system were 2018’s Oscar best picture winner “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and last year’s Cannes Palme D’or winner “Shoplifters.”

According to the alliance’s official WeChat account, there are 26 cinemas in Shenzhen under the alliance, including the Broadway Cinema in Coco Park, UA Cinema in KK Mall, CGV Cinema in Uniwalk and Lumiere Pavilions in Shekou.
