THREE plants that turn garbage into electricity will be put into use this year, according to a Southern Metropolis Daily report. The three plants, Shenzhen East Waste-to-Energy Plant in Longgang District, the Laohukeng plant Phase III in Bao’an District and Mawan City Energy Ecological Park in Nanshan District, will increase the city’s garbage handling capacity by 10,300 tons a day. Shenzhen East Waste-to-Energy Plant, located in the mountainous region on the outskirts of Shenzhen, is expected to incinerate 5,000 tons of rubbish per day, approximately one-third of the waste generated by residents. The facility will use the most advanced technologies for waste incineration and power generation. The Laohukeng project is expected to handle 3,800 tons of garbage a day, while the Mawan energy ecological park will handle 1,500 tons per day. Statistics show that the city will need to handle about 21,000 tons of garbage a day in 2020. The present landfill and garbage incineration power plant capacity wouldn’t be able to handle the increasing amount of garbage. (Han Ximin) |
