3 parents detained

Three parents in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, have been detained for faking photos of food in a primary school’s cafeteria to make it appear moldy, the information office of the municipal government said on its social media account on Sunday.

The parents released photos of supposedly moldy food last week and said their children had diarrhea and blood in their stools after eating in the cafeteria. Thirty-six students have been taken to the hospital for health checks, but health authorities said no food-related problems were found.

Overseas talent

The Ministry of Finance on Saturday announced a favorable tax policy for overseas talent working in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Based on the individual income tax differentials* between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, high-end talent and professionals from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other parts of the world working in the Greater Bay Area, and with skills that the country is short of, will get subsidies from Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City to offset the differentials.

Foreign investment law

The country’s national legislature on Friday passed a foreign investment law at the closing meeting of its annual session. The law will become effective on January 1, 2020.

An overwhelming* majority of the deputies present at the closing meeting of the second session of the 13th National People’s Congress voted in favor of the law. With unified provisions for the entry, promotion, protection and management of foreign investment, it is a new and fundamental law for China’s foreign investment.

After-school training

A deputy from Shenzhen to the National People’s Congress, Chen Hongtian, who is president of Cheung Kei Group, proposed at the annual meeting of the national legislature that teachers should not pass the buck* and ask parents to check homework, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported on Thursday.

Chen said that teachers are major players in children’s education, while parents only provide financial support and necessary tutoring at home.
