SCCSC holds 8th annual Bullying Awareness Week

“If you were a girl who is always mocked by other adolescent girls about her weight, what would you do?” This was one of the situations that students were asked to brainstorm about in terms of what they could do to make a difference in a bullying incident.

Themed “Responsibility in School Bullying,” the Shenzhen (Nanshan) Concord College of Sino-Canada (SCCSC)’s eighth annual Bullying Awareness Week is being held this week from Monday through Friday.

According to recent research, a holistic, whole-school approach appears to be the most effective way to reduce bullying behaviors in schools. Hence, various activities, such as an interactive fair, a variety show, a movie viewing, a basketball tournament, a peer buddy class, and a pink day photo, were carried out throughout the week to reinforce the idea that everyone has a responsibility to prevent school bullying.

“We believe that no matter who you are and which role you play in a bullying incident, by taking responsibility for your own actions, you have the power to make a difference in school bullying,” said Rui Chi, director of SCCSC’s Personal Development Center (PDC).

“It is important to hold this event, as bullying is common in every school,” said Grade 10 student, Xin Wang, who is a member of SCCSC’s Bullying Intervention Program (BIP) Student Committee.

“The event cultivates a friendly school environment that makes everyone feel safe.”

“If I saw a girl mocked about her weight, I would take action to stop the bullying,” Wang added.

SCCSC’s PDC hopes more and more students will reflect and take action as a result of BAW and other related events to prevent and intervene in bullying like Wang. The PDC believes that when we all act together, we will create a safer school.
