With a height of 1.77 meters at just 16 years old and great athletic talent, Liu Xinyu, a grade one student from the high school campus of Shenzhen Cuiyuan Middle School, finished as the second runner-up in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles at the third Asian Youth Athletics Championship held at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground in Hong Kong. Besides being one of the bronze medalists of the championship in Hong Kong, Liu, with deep roots in Luohu District, has already garnered the accolades of a professional athlete through years of hard work in track and field. She has been accredited as a national first-level athlete and called up by the national team to play in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina last October. Zhou Hongda, Liu’s coach at her school, said that Liu is an all-round athlete with not only the hurdles as her forte. She can also shine among her Shenzhen peers in an array of track and field events such as the 100-meter sprint, 200-meter sprint, high jump and triple jump. Zhou also added that it’s Liu’s endeavor to get good results in every single game regardless of its level and her parents’ great support that drive her to move towards the pathway of excellence. In addition to being well-known for track and field talents like Liu Xinyu, the Shenzhen Cuiyuan High School’s football team also enjoys a high reputation. The Asian Youth Athletics Championship is a biennial athletics competition open to athletes aged 16 and 17 from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. Its third edition, which was held in Hong Kong, ran from March 13 to 18. (Wang Haolan) |
