Tan Dun & Zhang Liangying

Chinese musician Tan Dun will bring his multimedia work “Nushu: The Secret Songs of Women” created in 2013 to open the Nanshan Pop Festival. “Nushu: The Secret Songs of Women” is a 13-movement work for video, solo harp and orchestra. Following five years of ethno-musicological research in Tan’s hometown in Hunan Province, the work captures the sounds of Nushu script, an old phonetic writing system devised by women living in the border region of Guangdong, Hunan and Guangxi.

Chinese pop singer Zhang Liangying will sing “Only for Love” composed by Tan for the Chinese film “The Banquet” in 2006. The song was nominated a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Original Film Song.

Young Norwegian violinist Eldbjorg Hemsing, who premiered several works by Tan, will also play a concerto at the show.

Hanggai Band & SZSO

Inner Mongolian folk music group Hanggai Band will collaborate with Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) to perform a night of folk music blended with modern symphony music. A folk outfit composed of ethnic Mongolians, Hanggai Band is captivating Chinese rock-heavy music scene with a contemporary feel. The band’s name is an ancient word that refers to a heavenly combination of the best of the Inner Mongolian landscape — big blue skies, mountains, rivers and trees.

Feng Mantian & his band

Chinese zhongruan master Feng Mantian will collaborate with his band, Chinese bamboo flute player Ding Xiaokui, keyboardist Zhang Jian and percussionist Zhao Bing for a concert. The zhongruan is a Chinese plucked string instrument that is played similarly to the pipa.

Zhu Dan & his friends

Chinese violinist Zhu Dan and his musician friends will present a night of classical and pop music. Zhu is widely recognized as one of the finest Chinese musicians on the international stage today, praised as “an artist of affecting humility and beautiful tone production” by The Strad magazine, performing internationally in North America, Europe and Asia.

Time: 7:30 p.m., April 14

Pop music

Various Chinese pop singers and bands will perform at three different shows.

Warren Mok

Chinese tenor Warren Mok will join hands with soprano Wang Bingbing, U.S. tenor James Price and U.S. soprano Haley Sicking for a night of operatic songs. Mok has performed many leading roles since his European debut in 1987 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has a repertoire of 50 operatic roles. Mok is currently the artistic director of the Macao International Music Festival and founder and artistic director of Opera Hong Kong.

Michelle Pan

Veteran pop singer Michelle Pan, who was active in Taiwan in the 1980s and 1990s, will sing her greatest hits at a concert.

Teresa Teng’s songs

Various singers will cover songs by Teresa Teng (1953-1995), who was one of the most famous and successful singers in the Chinese community worldwide. Teng was known for her folk songs and ballads.

Venue: OCT Harbor, Baishi Road, Nanshan District (南山区白石路欢乐海岸)
