PENG SHUILIN, who had the lower half of his body amputated after a serious car accident 15 years ago, has been able to support himself through his own labor over the years, Shenzhen TV reported. Peng, a migrant worker from Hunan Province, was run over at the waist by a 10-ton truck in the serious traffic accident in Buji, Longgang District, in 2004. Longgang District No. 2 People’s Hospital, then Shenzhen Buji Hospital, snatched him out of the jaws of death. However, the lower part of his body had to be amputated, leaving only 78 centimeters of his upper body. It had always been Peng’s wish to open a convenience store. In 2007, he returned to Changsha City, Hunan, and opened such a store with the love and encouragement of his family and society. Peng also wanted to get more young people to cherish and appreciate life by sharing his own experience. In 2011, a man identified as Chen Hao had completely lost faith in life after being left a paraplegic by a car accident. Peng learned about this situation and actively straightened Chen out with his own experience. “It was Peng who took me out of the shadows. What happened to me was a turning point. Peng was a mentor on my way to growth,” Chen said. Chen is now a driver who offers car-hailing services. He drives a modified car every day and earns his own money. As this year marks the 15th year since Peng’s “rebirth,” the medical staff at the Longgang hospital recently went to Changsha to visit him for an examination. Peng’s vital signs are stable at present. According to relevant data, Peng is the longest surviving high-level amputee in the world and is setting a new world record every day. (Zhang Yu) |
