Waste-free cities SHENZHEN and 10 other Chinese cities and five areas have been selected to pilot waste-free programs to curb trash. The pilot programs, led by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and 17 other ministerial-level bodies, were launched in Shenzhen on Monday. Xiongan New Area, Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area in Yizhuang, China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city, Guangze County in Fujian Province and Ruijin in Jiangxi Province also joined the program. About 10 billion tons of solid waste is produced annually in China. The “zero waste” concept in cities calls for reducing trash production at the source, cutting landfill capacity and increasing recycling. New high-speed rail A NEW high-speed railway connecting Shenzhen and Wuhan in Hubei Province has recently been proposed by the Hubei authority to meet the high demand for passenger trains on the current Shenzhen-Wuhan High-speed Rail. According to Shenzhen’s railway office, the proposed rail line will run from Wuhan through Jiangxi Province, from where the new rail will be linked with the Shenzhen-Ganzhou High-speed Rail, which is under construction. The new proposed railway is more than 100 kilometers shorter than the existing high-speed rail. The Shenzhen-Ganzhou High-Speed Rail is expected to be complete in 2021. New park A LARGE ecology park will be built in Dapeng New Area. Covering an area of 312,100 square meters near the Kuichong exit of Yanba Expressway, the park will feature a coastal resort area, a historical area and a cultural area by integrating local coastal tourism resources. |
