Students shine at mini Model United Nations event
    2019-05-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The second Nanshan District English Innovation Proposal Summit, organized by the Educational Science Research Institute of Shenzhen, was held at the Shenzhen Bay campus of Shenzhen OCT Middle School. Over 30 excellent contestants from seven high schools in the district joined the mini Model United Nations event.

The summit selected the “the contradiction between on-campus education and extra-curricular education” as its topic and took the international practice of Robert’s Rules of Order as a reference for its rules of debate. The participating teams carried out a fierce English debate on behalf of educational institutions, media, students, the education bureau, parents and schools.

During the debate, the students said that with the increasing number of educational institutions and students participating in training classes, students now face more pressure to study hard and parents face more economic pressure. Though the schools try to reduce the burden to study so rigorously, the mechanisms of examination and selection and competition between peers still exist.

After the debate, Shenzhen Yucai High School and Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Languages School won the best proposal award. Wu Weiqian from Shenzhen Yucai High School and Wang Wenxin from Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Languages School were awarded the best representative award.

“You are all fully prepared with detailed materials and expressed your views in simple but explicit English. This really surprised me. I look forward to your more excellent performance in the future,” said Zhang Xiaohong, dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Shenzhen University.

“The event today is just a new start for the senior grade one students; I hope it will become a tradition,” said Wang Weihua with Educational Science Research Institute of Shenzhen.
