Etiquette contest, a stage for hoteling flair

NINE properties of international hospitality brands across Shenzhen showcased hoteling flair and vied for accolades at the 2019 Futian Cup Shenzhen International Etiquette Contest at Sheraton Shenzhen Futian on Friday afternoon.

A catwalk show kicked off the contest, where contestants from the nine properties gave first impressions of their teams clad in fancy costumes, such as Hanfus (a traditional Chinese clothing).

Groups of five contestants from each hotel competed in three rounds of regular competitions, namely a bilingual prepared speech, a debate featuring etiquette knowledge and hoteling norms, and mock scenarios. Also, a calligraphy contest was held especially for expatriates.

Ding Junyuan, an orator from Hilton Shenzhen Futian, shared the story of her colleague, Adam Warner, who has made about 2,000 welcome cards by hand over the past five years, in her speech. Ding thinks that trivial things do make a great difference in serving visitors, and therefore they should arrive as guests and leave as friends.

Besides showcasing eloquence, contestants displayed an encyclopedic reservoir of etiquette knowledge in the debate, quoting renowned theorists like Confucius and Maslow, and had their stress management tested by different mock scenarios like flight delays, sudden illness, special food requests and more.

The calligraphy session was attended by participants from several nationalities. Puti Hafizhan Syarafina, a staffer with Sheraton Dameisha Resort from Indonesia, stunned the audience with her proficiency in calligraphy. “I practice calligraphy every morning at eight o’clock before I go to work. The characters are difficult for me to write at first, but one of my colleagues at the hotel assists me in learning that, which has been really helpful,” she said.

Christoph Zbinden, general manager of Hard Rock Hotel Shenzhen and the only hotelier competing in the contest, told the Shenzhen Daily that he took great pleasure in serving as a contestant. “It is a competition that actually brings the team together. Through working together with my teammates, I get to recognize their talents and watch them blossom,” he said.

Awards were given to the teams based on their overall scores: InterContinental Hotel Shenzhen bagged the first prize and the Award for Internet Popularity, Hard Rock Hotel Shenzhen won the second prize, Sheraton Dameisha Resort won the third prize, JW Marriot Hotel Shenzhen Bao’an won the Best Fashion Award, Sheraton Shenzhen Futian won the Best Etiquette Award, JW Shenzhen Downtown & The Westin Shenzhen Nanshan team won the Best Performance Award, Hilton Shenzhen Futian won the Best Popularity Award and Shangri-La Hotel Shenzhen Luohu won the Best Organization Award. The Ambassador of Etiquette Award went to Si Li, an Italian staffer with InterContinental Hotel Shenzhen who referred to herself by her Chinese name.

The contest was hosted by the Publicity Department of the Futian District Committee of the CPC and organized by the Shenzhen Daily, the Shenzhen Tourism Association, www.eyeshenzhen.com and the Shenzhen Hotel Business Association.
