HE’S a woofer too! A labrador-akita puppy cross who is just a few weeks old has already taken to his new dizzying trade — helping to lay thatched roofs with his master. The dog, named Shuck, is following in the paw prints of black labrador Axel, who spent 13 years working with thatcher Richard Haughton, in Witton, Norfolk in the U.K., until his death last year. Shuck now has the honor of being carried up the ladder before taking a comfortable spot next to Haughton, who runs Broadland Thatchers, as he goes about his work. “He’s new to the family, he is new to the business. I’ve only had him a few weeks but he is already fitting in with us and, you know, he’s really enjoying the trade,” he told the BBC. “He’s our new generation of dog on the roof with us. We used to have Axel, he passed away last year,” he added. Shuck is named after a local legend involving a ghostly one-eyed demonic dog, Black Shuck, that is said to stalk the countryside. Axel became a local celebrity during his time high up, and Shuck is likely to follow him. Haughton said of Axel in 2012, “He comes everywhere with me and is perfectly happy to sit and watch us at work,” said the father of two from Witton. “When he was a pup we had to carry him up the ladder but he soon learned how to climb the rungs himself. “You just have to be behind him so he has the confidence to get up,” he added.
