Eighty Shenzhen students competed in Global Natural History Day’s regional nature science painting contest on Sunday at Shenzhen Museum.

The regional contest, held at the museum’s two wildlife animal specimen halls, required children aged 4 to 18 to create a painting of provided specimens with a 200-word description within two hours. Donated by U.S. philanthropist Kenneth Eugene Behring, the specimens of animals included deer, wolves, cheetahs and polar bears.

According to the museum staff, before the regional contest, they received 182 entries from local schools and art academies. The 80 candidates’ paintings will then be judged from scientific and artistic perspectives. Results will be announced by June 20.

Hosted by the Behring Global Educational Foundation from the United States, Global Natural History Day is an annual international educational event designed to inspire interest in the natural sciences. In addition to the painting contest, the event also includes a nature knowledge contest, which requires students to present scientific research by doing experiments and making presentation models or posters. On May 26, 20 teams of Shenzhen students aged between 7 and 18 joined the regional knowledge contest at the museum, presenting their thoughtful research on nature.

Winners of the painting and knowledge contests will join the final contest in Shanghai in mid-July.
