Human genetic resources The State Council published a regulation on the management of human genetic resources that will take effect on July 1. The regulation aims to enhance protection of human genetic resources, promote their proper use, and tighten regulation and supervision, said a State Council statement on Monday. According to the regulation, human genetic resources refer to substances containing human genes, such as organs and cells, as well as information about human genes. Entrance exams The country’s annual college entrance exams began Friday as an estimated 10 million students sat the critical exams needed to pursue their higher education. The exams lasted two days generally but due to different arrangements, in some provincial regions it might run until Sunday, the Ministry of Education said. The number of students applying to take the exams this year is the highest since 2010, according to an annual report published by EOL website, an education information service provider. Guilty of phubbing A total of 84.9 percent of people in a recent survey said obsession with their smartphones has made them spend less time communicating with their families and 78.9 percent said they feel guilty for doing so. The survey, published by the China Youth Daily last week, polled 2,004 people, about 90 percent of whom saw their obsession as an obstruction to personal communication with family members. This feeling appeared to be even stronger among people in their 30s as 91.4 percent of them complained about the impact of “phubbing*.” Safety in US Two of China’s ministries have issued alerts for Chinese tourists and institutions to raise their security awareness in the United States. A travel alert issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism noted the frequent occurrence* of shootings, robberies and theft in the United States recently. The ministry warned Chinese tourists to fully assess the risks of traveling there. Chinese tourists are urged to learn about the public security situation and related laws and regulations of tourist destinations, to raise safety awareness and step up precautions to stay safe.(SD-Agencies) |
