Artemisinin resistance

Nobel laureate* Tu Youyou announced on Monday that her team has proposed solutions to the problem of artemisinin* resistance, providing new evidence that artemisinin is still “the best weapon” against malaria*, the world’s No. 1 insect-borne infectious disease.

As the winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize for the discovery of artemisinin, Tu said that the drug resistance has remained a big challenge to fighting malaria. Tu’s team has been devoted to the study of the resistant mechanism since 2015 and discovered that partial artemisinin resistance is actually a delay in the clearance of malaria parasites* from the bloodstream following treatment with combination therapy.

Law amendments

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced on Saturday that the HKSAR Government will suspend the amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance until further communication and explanation work is completed.

“I now announce that the government has decided to suspend the legislative amendment exercise,” Lam told a press conference on Saturday afternoon at the HKSAR Government headquarters building.

New board

The Shanghai Stock Exchange has accepted initial public offering (IPO) applications from nine Shenzhen companies aiming to list on its Science and Technology Innovation Board (STAR Market) by Sunday.

Among them, Shenzhen Chipscreen Bioscience Co. is expected to be the first local company to launch an IPO on the board.

New airport subway line

Self-driving trains for the subway line connecting downtown Beijing with its new international airport started a trial run on Saturday, according to local authorities.

Stretching 41.4 kilometers, the new line supports an autopilot* system and can run at a speed of 160 km per hour, with as many as 448 passengers, according to Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office. It runs through Daxing and Fentai, two districts in the southern part of Beijing.(SD-Agencies)
