Classics recital competition a throwback to old times
    2019-06-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

南山学子一起穿越亘古,隔空“对话” 中华经典诗文吟诵

A recital competition featuring classical Chinese poetry and prose was held at the Shenzhen Bay Campus of Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town High School on June 16 and was attended by 14 primary and middle schools in Nanshan District.

Resounding on the stage were chants from “Book of Songs” accompanied by traditional Chinese musical instruments including the pipa, erhu, guzheng and chime bells.

Dressed up in hanfu, the traditional Chinese clothing, teachers and students reminisced about the ancient ages while giving a modern twist to classical works during their performances.

A highlight of the competition that night was the traditional Chinese recreation show staged by Shenzhen Haibin Experimental School, where the spectators feasted their eyes on the charms of cujyu (Chinese football), touhu (Chinese pitch-pot games) and more.

Three schools won the grand prizes at the competition, namely Yucai No.3 Middle School, Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town High School Shenzhen Bay Campus and Nantou Ancient City Primary School, while five schools won runner-up prizes.

According to Liu Genping, head of the Nanshan District Education Bureau, through the recital, the beauty of Chinese cultural heritage — which has a history of over 3,000 years — was fully activated across the campuses thanks to the competition.

Embodied in the performances were the gems of all-round education and cultural confidence. He expressed his hope that teachers and students will keep deepening their understanding of traditional culture and thereby enrich their spiritual lives.

The recital competition was a sideline event of the 2019 Nanshan Traditional Cultural Festival of Primary and Middle Schools started this April. Besides the prize winners at the competition, the second batch of traditional cultural schools and events of the district were also unveiled.

The cultural festival has been held for three consecutive years since 2017.
