A BABY girl found abandoned in Georgia, the United States, is now doing well, and hundreds of people have expressed interest in adopting her, authorities said.

The unidentified infant, who has been given the name India, was estimated to be just hours old when she was found June 6 in a plastic bag in a wooded area in Forsyth County. She has since been in the care of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, and is now “smiling,” “laughing” and in good health, Georgia DFCS Director Tom Rawlings told “Good Morning America.”

“We have people waiting in line to provide that child with a forever home,” Rawlings told “Good Morning America.” More than 1,000 people from around the world have contacted the agency expressing interest in adopting India, Rawlings said. He added that she will likely go to a family in Georgia, where there is already a waiting list of more than 200 families looking to adopt.

Dramatic body camera footage from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputy who responded to the scene where Baby India was found captured the attention of countless people. As of Friday afternoon, the video on the sheriff’s office Facebook page had had nearly 2,000 comments and more than 7,500 shares.

The sheriff’s office posted an update Friday thanking people for the outpouring of support, and saying it hasn’t yet found any of Baby India’s relatives.

Rawlings said he hopes Baby India’s story will help draw attention to other children waiting to be adopted.
