Underwater hotel planned
    2019-07-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE first underwater hotel in Queensland, Australia, will be built in the southern Great Barrier Reef.

The 36-meter, three-level pontoon will be fixed to the sea bed in the lagoon surrounding Lady Musgrave Island off the central Queensland coast.

It will sleep up to 24 people in bunks on the bottom level, which will have 360-degree underwater views. The State Government is contributing US$1 million to the development which uses solar power and will be made partly of recyclable materials.

“We know this will create a splash right around the world as people globally will want to come and see our tourism icon, the Great Barrier Reef,” tourism minister Kate Jones said.

The department predicts the development will draw an extra 16,000 visitors to the region every year.

The pontoon will also be a base for day activities like snorkelling, diving and glass bottom boat tours, as well as being available for wedding and exclusive events.

Lady Musgrave Experience managing director Brett Lakey said the project would increase the world-class offerings and capabilities for Lady Musgrave Experience and benefit the entire region.

An all-inclusive two-day, one-night experience will cost about US$550. The first visitors will be welcomed in time for Easter next year. (SD-Agencies)
