YANG JIAN and Lin Shan added one more gold medal for the Chinese diving “dream team” at the 18th FINA world championships in South Korea on Tuesday.

It was the eighth gold for China in Gwangju, as the country maintained its top position on the medal table, along with two silvers and a bronze.

In the 3m/10m mixed team event Tuesday night, Yang and Lin scored a total of 416.65 points with flawless dives in all three rounds.

The silver medal went to the Russian duo Iuliia Timoshinina and Sergey Nazin, with Americans Katrina Young and Andrew Capobianco settling for bronze.

Since the mixed team event was included in the world championships program in 2015, China’s diving team failed to snare the gold in Kazan, Russia; and Budapest, Hungary.

Yang said afterwards that he was satisfied with the victory, as China had suffered two failures in the previous FINA worlds. “Thanks to comprehensive improvement in training, we won the gold medal,” he told reporters.

The Chinese artistic swimming team won its second silver, as its routine “Chasing Dreams” earned 95.1543 points in the women’s team technical event on the day.

“Just like the theme of our routine today, we havealways been chasing dreams since we started competing in the world championships,” said Huang Yuchen of the Chinese team. “We are getting closer to it now.”

Russia defended its title with 96.9426 points and Ukraine took third place with 93.4514.

In the women’s 10m platform, China’s rising star Chen Yuxi and her 14-year-old teammate Lu Wei ranked first and second at Nambu University Municipal Aquatics Center to qualify for the finals scheduled for yesterday.

The Chinese women’s water polo team lost to Australia 12-14 in an exciting and tight game. It now ranks third in Group D after two rounds.

“We had a close and good game. We made some mistakes in defense that cost us victory. We should strengthen on that in our next game against Italy,” captain Wang Xinyan said.

Florian Wellbrock of Germany claimed the gold in the men’s 10km open water swimming, after arriving at the finishing point only 0.2 second ahead of French opponent Marc-Antoine Olivier.   (Xinhua)
