Suspension box for key bridge installed
    2019-07-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE second steel suspension box for the construction of the Lingdingyang Bridge of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor has been successfully installed on a 28-pile foundation after nearly 10 hours of construction, according to the Shenzhen Economic Daily.

This marks the conclusion of the work to install the steel suspension boxes for the eastern tower of the Lingdingyang Bridge. The rest of the work will be conducted above water, laying a foundation for both the construction of the weight bearing platform as well as the towers of the Lingdingyang Bridge, according to a staffer from Guangdong Traffic Group.

Lingdingyang Bridge, part of the giant Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, rises 90 meters above the water, which is equal to the height of a 30-story building. It spans 1,666 meters and includes towers on both the east and west sides.

After construction, Lingdingyang Bridge might be the highest mid-ocean bridge in the world, the report said.

The weight bearing platform, for which the steel suspension box plays an important role, is said to be a key structure for withstanding force.

“A steel suspension box is like the armor of a weight bearing platform. When the platform is under water, it can help pump out water so that workers can work in dry areas,” said Chen Bingyao, an engineer with the bridge department of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, Project Management Center, adding that the box can also increase the durability of the platform and bridge, and help withstand collisions caused by vessels.

The design of the Lingdingyang Bridge calls for a total of four big steel suspension boxes, weighing nearly 1,800 tons each and having outer diameters measuring 41.2 meters.

Next, the bottom part of the weight bearing platform for the east tower of the bridge will be constructed. The suspension boxes will ensure a dry working environment for the construction of the major parts of the platform.

Both the suspension box and platform project are scheduled to be finished by the end of this year, according to the report.  (Wang Jingli)
