Caeleb Dressel adds 3 golds at FINA Worlds

CAELEB DRESSEL of the United States added three more gold medals to take his personal tally to six at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea on Saturday.

Dressel, who won seven world titles in Budapest two years ago, touched home first in a championship record time of 21.04 seconds in the men’s 50m freestyle final.

Bruno Fratus of Brazil and Kristian Gkolomeev of Greece tied for the silver medal with a time of 21.45.

The U.S. swimmer then clocked 49.66 seconds in the 100m butterfly final to snatch his fifth gold. He had previously claimed titles in the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle relay events.

Dressel was followed by Andrei Minakov of Russia in 50.83 and Chad Le Clos of South Africa in 51.16 for silver and bronze medals.

The sixth gold medal for Dressel came from the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay final. The U.S. quartet set a new world record of 3:19.40 in the event, winning its third consecutive title since the event was introduced in 2015.

Australia placed second in

3:19.97, and France followed with a time of 3:22.11 for the bronze medal.

Five-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky of the United States took her first gold medal of the championships in the women’s 800m freestyle, finishing in 8:13.58.

Simona Quadarella of Italy took the silver in 8:14.99, and Ariarne Titmus of Australia, who beat Ledecky in the 400m freestyle final, came next in

8:15.70 to win the bronze.
