Car crash in Cairo sets off fire at hospital, kills 19

A photo taken on Monday shows the site of an explosion in Cairo, Egypt. A multiple-car crash set off an explosion that ignited a fire at Egypt’s main cancer hospital and caused 19 deaths, the government said. The health ministry said 30 others were injured by the crash near Cairo’s famed Tahrir Square on late Sunday. SD-Agencies

30 killed in 2 mass shootings in the US

A mass shooting on Saturday killed at least 20 and injured 26 others in the U.S. state of Texas, according to local officials.

In a separate case, the second mass shooting in the United States within 24 hours, a mass shooting on early Sunday morning in the city of Dayton, Ohio killed nine people and injured at least 16 others, local police said. The shooter is deceased.

The suspect in the first case, now in custody, was identified as Patrick Crusius, a 21-year-old white male from Texas, according to Texas Police Chief Greg Allen. The shooting has a “nexus* to a hate crime,” said Allen.

Trump pick for intelligence director withdrawing

U.S. President Donald Trump’s pick for national intelligence director, Texas Rep. John Ratcliffe, withdrew from consideration on Friday after just five days as he faced growing questions about his experience and qualifications.

The move underscored the uncertainty over his confirmation prospects. Democrats openly dismissed the Republican congressman as an unqualified partisan and Republicans offered only lukewarm and tentative expressions of support.

2nd Ebola case confirmed in Congo city

Officials in Congo on July 30 said a second Ebola case had been confirmed in Goma, the city of more than 2 million people whose first confirmed case in this yearlong outbreak was reported earlier this month.

There appeared to be no link between the man’s case and the previous one in Goma, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, a local Ebola response coordinator, told reporters.

He arrived on July 13 from a mining area in northeastern Congo’s Ituri Province and started showing symptoms on July 22. He is now isolated at an Ebola treatment center.

PM’s girlfriend has moved into Downing Street

Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds have moved into Downing Street, the new U.K. prime minister’s spokeswoman said.

There had been speculation over whether Symonds, who has quickly become a mainstay* in British tabloid newspapers, would join Johnson at the residence.

The move makes Johnson the first prime minister in living memory to live with an unmarried partner in No. 10.

S. Arabia allows women to travel without male consent

Saudi Arabia on Friday published new laws that loosen restrictions on women by allowing all citizens — women and men alike — to apply for a passport and travel freely, ending a long-standing guardianship policy that had controlled women’s freedom of movement.

The kingdom’s legal system has long been criticized because it treated adult women as minors, requiring they have a man’s consent to obtain a passport or travel abroad. The changes were widely celebrated by Saudis.(SD-Agencies)
