Science awards

Beijing has updated the regulations of its science awards by setting up three new categories for individuals, including foreign talent.

According to the revised regulations released on Friday, winners of the three new awards will be individuals who have made outstanding scientific and technological achievements, young talents under the age of 40 and foreigners who have made contributions to promoting Beijing’s science and technology development.

Traffic chaos

More than 200 flights were canceled, several MTR lines suspended and bus stops overcrowded in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday as radical protesters created chaos in an attempt to paralyze* the city’s traffic.

People from all walks of life in Hong Kong have also expressed their indignation* over the act by some radicals of flinging* the Chinese national flag into the sea. They strongly condemned the act as a flagrant* trampling* on the national dignity and the principle of “one country, two systems,” calling on the Hong Kong government to hold the perpetrators* accountable.

Tariffs threat

China will have to take “necessary countermeasures” to defend its core national interests and its people’s fundamental interests if the United States goes ahead with tariff hikes on Chinese goods worth US$300 billion starting September 1.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a press briefing on Friday, adding the ensuing consequences will all be born by the U.S. side. Hua called the 10-percent tariff hikes by the United States a “serious violation” of the consensus reached by the two countries’ heads of state at the G20 summit in Osaka in Japan.

Porsche owner

Chongqing police announced on Thursday that they will set up a special team to investigate a case involving a female driver and her policeman husband after video of her slapping a man in the street went viral.

“The Chongqing Public Security Bureau asks the Yubei District sub-bureau to set up a team to investigate Li and her husband Tong Xiaohua, chief of Shichuan police station in Yubei District,” said a statement.
