Jailed couple has video call on Chinese Valentine’s Day
    2019-08-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A COUPLE jailed for smuggling were granted a remote video meeting on Qixi, Wednesday, after more than two years of separate confinement, according to Sznews.com Wednesday.

The couple, who had worked as online shopping agents, was arrested two years ago for smuggling goods into Shenzhen, with over 3.5 million yuan (US$496,989) worth of goods involved. The husband, surnamed Li, was sentenced to six years in prison at Shenzhen Prison. His wife, surnamed He, received a four-year prison sentence at Guangdong Women’s Prison in Guangzhou.

They had not met since their arrest. “I used to live with little knowledge of the law and dragged my wife into smuggling, for which I am extremely regretful. Other prisoners have their wives visit, but my wife is also in prison,” Li said. With two to three years of imprisonment remaining, the couple cannot meet each other until they finish their full prison terms.

After communication with Guangdong Women’s Prison, the Shenzhen Prison arranged a remote video meeting for the couple on Qixi, Chinese Valentine’s Day. The meeting room was specially decorated with balloons and festive paintings.

A police officer at the women’s prison said that this kind of special meetings could help female prisoners strengthen their resolve in serving their sentences.

After the 25-minute meeting, Li was extremely grateful for being given such a precious opportunity. “I will learn more about the law in the following days. I used to think that paying taxes was sufficient to pay back society, but it’s more than that,” Li said.

It is not the first time that a couple serving sentences simultaneously has had a remote video meeting. Officials at the Shenzhen Prison said that it has arranged 1,271 remote video meetings, 32 of which were between prisoners that were family members and 18 were between spouses, since February 2018.
