Powerful typhoon

Typhoon Lekima has left 49 dead and 21 missing in Zhejiang, Shandong and Anhui, wreaking havoc there with torrential rains and strong gales.

By Monday morning, the death toll in Zhejiang Province had risen to 39 while nine others remained missing, said the Zhejiang flood control headquarters. The ninth and strongest typhoon of the year has affected 6.68 million residents in Zhejiang, among whom 1.26 million were evacuated. It damaged 234,000 hectares of crops, inflicting a direct economic loss of 24.22 billion yuan (US$3.4 billion).

Students enrolled

Peking University (PKU) on Sunday announced they would enroll two students from Central China’s Henan Province that they previously rejected due to their relatively low scores on the national college entrance examination.

“The two students meet our enrollment standards and will be accepted as our new students,” the university announced on Sina Weibo on Sunday afternoon. “Our previous rejection was irregular and we decided to admit the two candidates.”

Foreign teachers

The Guangdong Provincial Department of Education is requiring all universities, colleges, schools, kindergartens and related training agencies to check the backgrounds and establish special files for all foreign teachers before September 15.

The notice was issued after the department received a growing number of complaints from parents that some foreign teachers in some training agencies were not qualified, and a few of them were tourists. In addition to helping foreigners apply for work permits, schools and training agencies are asked to strictly assess the foreign teachers’ morality before they are hired, the notice said.

Flights canceled

All flights in and out of China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) were canceled on Monday due to a protest held at the Hong Kong International Airport, according to the local airport authority.

The most pressing and overriding task for Hong Kong is to stop the violence, end the chaos and restore order, Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a symposium* on August 7.(SD-Agencies)
