杀猪盘
    2019-09-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“杀猪” means “to kill a pig,” and “盘” means “set.” Coined by Chinese netizens, this term, which literally means “a setup to kill a pig,” in fact refers to “a long con.” Using the image of keeping a pig and killing it when it has grown fat, this term mercilessly compares the victim to a pig. A long con usually requires more planning, a longer window of interaction with the con’s target, and a longer period of time to execute. The most common long con involves using an attractive woman or man to lure the target into an online “relationship,” and then luring them to start gambling on illegal platforms. The loss of money is inevitable.

Example:

A: 小李似乎最近找了个漂亮女朋友。

Xiǎolǐ sìhū zuìjìn zhǎo le ge piāoliang nǚpéngyou。

It seems Xiaoli just got a cute girlfriend.

B: 听说是个杀猪盘骗局,好在他及时醒悟过来。

Tīngshuō shì ge shāzhūpán piànjú,hǎozài tā jíshí xǐngwù guòlái。

I’ve heard that the online “girlfriend” is part of a long con, and he luckily saw the truth.
