City boasts world’s largest e-cab fleet
    2019-09-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN now boasts the world’s largest electricity-powered taxi fleet, with 21,689 such vehicles running on the roads.

It is also the only first-tier city in China that has realized its goal of getting 100 percent of its traditional taxis to go electric, according to Shenzhen Municipal Public Transport Bureau, which held a ceremony at P+R Charging Station in Longhua on the quality and intelligence of the city’s cab service.

The ridership of Shenzhen’s traditional cabs reached 1.06 million trips a day in 2018, an increase of 4.6 percent.

The charging station in Minzhi Subdistrict is said to be the largest EV charging station in the world with a total of 637 fast chargers in service. It charges the city’s cab fleet, which consists mostly of BYD e6 cars.

The city’s 20,000-plus electric taxis have reduced carbon emissions by about 850,000 tons a year, six times the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the Mt. Wutong scenic park. It has helped save the energy equivalent of 323,000 tons of standard coal and reduce pollutants by 438 tons a year.

To improve the city’s cab service, Shenzhen has implemented intelligent technologies, such as facial recognition and mobile payment, in cab terminals.

The e-receipt app now covers 97 percent of all cabs and issues 6,000 receipts a day.

The city now also requires that newly registered app-based cars be fully electric.

In an amendment to the city’s cab management, all vehicles that are registered for app-based car hailing services are required to be electricity-powered. The transport bureau has issued business licenses to 17 app-based car hailing platforms and business certificates to 58,425 vehicles.

Shenzhen is one of 13 pilot cities promoting alternative-energy public transport to cut smog and develop the alternative energy industry.

Shenzhen’s bus fleet has been completely electric since 2017.
