1,556 arrested

Eighty people were arrested in violence over the weekend in Hong Kong, bringing the total arrests to 1,556 people as months-long violence and unrest continued to roil Hong Kong, the Hong Kong police said on Monday.

Hong Kong witnessed another turbulent weekend as radical protesters vandalized metro stations, defaced China’s national flag, and hurled petrol bombs at police and set fires in streets, which prompted riot police to respond with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Women’s causes

China on Thursday issued a white paper on the progress of women’s causes in the past 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The white paper, titled “Equality, Development and Sharing: Progress of Women’s Causes in 70 Years Since New China’s Founding,” has reviewed the progress that China has made in safeguarding women’s rights and gender equality. The founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 ushered in a new era for women in China, changing their social status from an oppressed and enslaved group in the past thousands of years to masters of their own fate, the white paper said.

Low-flying vehicles

Beijing will ban the flying of low, slow and small aerial vehicles around the upcoming 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, local police said Wednesday.

The ban, targeting aerial vehicles and balloons for sports, entertainment and advertising, will go into effect within the city lasting from 8 a.m. on September 20 to 6 p.m. on October 2, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security.

Panda twins

A pair of panda twins were born to both captive and wild parents in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, according to China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

Panda Qiao Qiao, 10, gave birth to the twins at the Hetaoping panda base in Wolong on September 16. One of the cubs is male and weighs 206.6 grams, the gender and weight of the other are still unknown as it is under the close protection of the mother. Experts say it is very rare for a panda cub to weigh over 200 grams. (SD-Agencies)
