2019“书香校园”评选科技感十足

The application of information technologies in promoting intramural reading is highly rated by the annual appraisal of “Campuses of Scholars” in Guangdong Province this year.

The appraisal encourages candidates to apply big data technologies to assessments of reading classes as well as bring forth new methodologies for reading, such as electronic and audible books, to cultivate good reading habits in students.

As a pilot school of the latest extensive reading courses, Shenzhen Lucheng Foreign Languages School has established a big data platform for portraying the personas of each student and keeping a record of their reading abilities and preferences for the customization of curricula.

Students can also experience paperless reading via their tablets on the Shenzhen Children’s Library reading resource-sharing platform and attend online reading and writing classes with their peers across the country via a WeChat sharing classroom, according to Wu Liping, head of the school.

Shenzhen had a total of 15 “Campuses of Scholars” in 2017 and 2018. The city is a national leader in popularizing paperless reading among children alongside Hangzhou, Wenzhou and Changsha.

A 2018 report on the domestic development of paperless reading among children shows that Chinese children read an average of 40 digital books per year, while children in the U.S. read an average of 23 digital books each year according to statistics released by Scholastics, the world’s largest publisher of children’s books.
