AN SUV lost control and rammed into a safety island, killing two people and injuring one more at the intersection of Xiangmei Road and Lianhua Road in Futian District yesterday.

One died at the scene and the other died after attempted treatment at a hospital. The injured person is receiving treatment at the hospital, Shenzhen traffic police said on its official microblog.

The video clip circulated online shows that the stone posts used to protect pedestrians from traffic were broken during the accident that happened at around 3:24 p.m.

Police said the driver had been detained and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Tests showed the driver was not driving under the influence of alcohol.

Two similar accidents happened on Hongli Road in recent months, raising public concerns over the safety of safety islands.

On July 21, a driver driving in reverse at the intersection of Hongli Road and Nongxuan Road knocked down and injured three people and a traffic light post.

On Aug. 30, a cab lost control at the intersection of Hongling Road and Hongli Road, hitting a bus and injuring one pedestrian and two others.
