YOUNG Chinese pianist Yuja Wang has won the Gramophone Classical Music Award in the Instrumental category, for her album “The Berlin Recital.” The album recorded last year includes works by Rachmaninov’s preludes, Ligeti’s etudes and sonatas by Scriabin and Prokofiev. Gramophone’s David Fanning praised the album released by Deutsche Grammophon saying: “Anyone hitherto more put off than drawn in by Yuja Wang’s glamorous image may have to do some rethinking in the light of this recital. Fabulous piano sound, too: to capture large-hall, high-impact playing such as this without compromise or distortion is an achievement in itself.” Wang was awarded Gramophone’s prestigious Young Artist of the Year Award in 2009. In December 2018, “The Berlin Recital” was listed as one of Gramophone’s Best New Classical Albums. The 2019 Classical Music Award ceremony was held Wednesday at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London’s Covent Garden. The awards were broadcast free by Medici TV to audience members in more than 180 countries and regions. The broadcast will also be available on Classic FM’s website and on the Gramophone website until January 2020.(SD-Agencies) |
