AN infant who was born weighing only 750 grams was successfully discharged from Shenzhen Nanshan Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital after 86 days of joint efforts by the medical staff and the family members of the newborn, sznews.com reported.
A woman surnamed Sun, who was only 24 weeks and three days pregnant, gave birth to the baby girl identified as Huhu at the hospital July 31, three months earlier than the due date.
Huhu’s skin was almost transparent when she was born and her entire body was only the size of an adult’s palm. Moreover, she had weak breathing, pale skin and slow response time.
As the newborn was in dire danger, the neonatal pediatric team and obstetric medical staff, who are ready for rescues in advance, carried out emergency resuscitation in the shortest possible time. Tracheal intubation and t-combined positive pressure ventilation were used.
The hospital set up a special medical group to help bring Huhu out of danger. Under the meticulous treatment and multi-disciplinary cooperation, the newborn was successfully brought through a series of complications.
Huhu also received kangaroo mother care, a technique of newborn care where babies are kept in skin to skin contact with their mother. The method is said to not only help the mother understand the characteristics of the premature infant and learn the correct nursing methods, but also to help the infant start breastfeeding as soon as possible.
After nearly three months of attentive treatment and care, Huhu had grown to 2,100 grams when she was discharged from the hospital.
