International piano star Li Yundi will present Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 664,” Chopin’s “Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58” and Rachmaninoff’s “Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 33” and “Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 36” at a recital at Shenzhen Poly Theater. A graduate from the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, Li is best known for being the youngest pianist to win the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in 2000 at the age of 18, and for judging it in 2015. Since he won the competition, he has been regarded as a leading exponent of Chopin’s music. In recognition of his contribution to Polish culture, the Government of Poland presented a Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis to Li in 2010. The New York Times praised Li, saying “the brilliant young Chinese pianist has proved a technically astounding pianist who is by turns elegant and rambunctious, coolly expressive and white-hot.” His solo piano concerts have received with delirious approval and the deep love from the music fans, especially in Europe, America, Japan and China. Equally committed to promoting classical music in an educational context, Li is one of the pioneers of musical education in China, where his success story has played a crucial role in millions of children learning the piano. He has also given master classes at the Royal College of Music, University of Cambridge and Tsinghua University. In autumn 2012, he was appointed associate dean and professor of the Piano Faculty at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Li has released 15 CDs worldwide on Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Classics. In 2003 the album “Liszt” won the German Echo Album Solo Award, the Netherlands Edison Award, the Chinese Gold Record Award and the New York Times Annual Recommendation. In 2007, he became the first Chinese pianist to record live with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Seiji Ozawa. This Deutsche Grammophon disc met with rave reviews and was named “Editor’s Choice” by Gramophone magazine.
