Post-00s SZ author: Writing is a habit as natural as eating and drinking

深圳00后作家出书:写作就像喝水吃饭一样自然

A seminar on the emerging of authors born after the 2000s in Shenzhen campuses was held in Shenzhen Central Book City on October 27. Three post-00s authors, together with scholars and experts in the fields of cultural creation, young adult reading, writing practice, adolescent psychology and family education, gave lectures and shared with the audience their opinions on this new phenomenon.

The event was jointly held by the Creation and Research Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Literary and Art Federation, Shenzhen Municipal Association for Literary Critics, and Shenzhen Municipal Literary and Art Federation for Students.

As initiatives like “Reading Classics,” “Sunny Writing” and “Creative Writing” roll out across the city, Shenzhen has witnessed the emergence of more and more teenaged authors. The Shenzhen edition of “To Youth,” a collection of books written by post-00s authors in the city, is to be published soon. Among them is a full-length science fiction piece, the first of its kind in the country.

Creative writing is becoming increasingly popular among Shenzhen students, and passion for writing science fiction has become a new campus phenomenon, according to recent research on on-campus writing conducted by the Shenzhen Municipal Literary and and Art Federation.

The number of literary societies in primary and middle schools are on the increase. Statistics show that there are now over 500 such literary societies in the city, and over 150 literary magazines are published on a regular basis. They have become the cradle of many excellent teenage literary works.

Huang Zizhen is a graduate of Shenzhen Experimental School and now a freshman at Shenzhen University. Under the guidance of Zhang Bigong, former principal of Shenzhen University and an expert in Chinese classics studies, she completed her book “Red Chamber of the Dream Creator” when she was in high school. According to Huang, the best way to inherit traditional culture is to make it popular again.

Reading and writing has always been an indispensable part of life for Tao Rui, a third-year junior middle school student at Lianhua Middle School and the author of “Only Juvenile’s Heart.” For Tao, writing is a habit as natural as eating and drinking.

Thirteen-year-old Chen Pengyu graduated from Funan Primary School and is now a second-year junior middle school student at Shenzhen Experimental School. The author of “The King of Snakes” said the works of Shen Shixi opened the door to a new world for him.

The parents of the three young authors were also present at the seminar.

“As parents, the keyword for us is ‘watching.’ We watch our kids grow up healthily and happily,” said Chen Pengyu’s father.

School representatives, including Wu Pingbo, a Chinese teacher at Shenzhen Experimental School, Xu Lianjia, principal of Lianhua Middle School, and Qiu Kunbin, principal of Funan Primary School, agreed that children’s competencies need to be discovered and respected by parents, and that the schools should create an environment that encourages reading among students.
