Letters From Readers
    2019-11-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

I LIKED the article “Tough traffic regulations save lives” in the Nov. 4 edition of the Shenzhen Daily. I have written several times to the newspaper over the years about this subject. Recently I wrote about the fact that I was amazed how well all road users (including pedestrians) behave in Shanghai. This is said to be a result of a yearlong campaign penalizing and educating road users who do not comply with the traffic rules. I have had a driver’s license for over 40 years and have been driving private cars all over the world but must say that China remains one of the most challenging places to drive. Why? Many people fail to abide by the rules:

• Pedestrians walk on the main road dressed in dark colors in an unlit area on a dark evening.

• Drivers of all kind of vehicles drive on the wrong side of the road.

• People park their cars randomly, blocking traffic and creating massive traffic jams.

• Bus drivers do not stop in the proper bay.

• We have the most beautiful roadsides in Shenzhen with lots of greenery. Unfortunately this greenery grows very fast and high, blocking sight at crossings. It is advised to keep greenery near crossings under 75 cm tall.

• Schools do not adequately educate their students on how to behave safely in traffic as teachers and schools do not “score” points with that. So are students’ scores on any subject important but their lives are not?

• Quite often when I drive along Wanghai Road From Shekou Hilton towards Shenzhen Bay, I have to stop for almost every traffic light. Make “green flows” in which all traffic lights will be kept green when motorists drive at a speed of 50 km per hour. It is simple, and then there is also no need for speeding. We have the IT knowledge for that as it was implemented in certain cities in the Netherlands decades ago.

• Lots and lots of drivers park on or very close to a pedestrian crossing. There should be (and in many countries it is a law) a rule that you are not allowed to park or stop within 10 meters from either side of a pedestrian crossing. The reason is pedestrians need to see cars coming and drivers need to be able to see pedestrians who want to cross.  Jeffry Kuperus via email
