WU LEI finally broke his 653-minute goal drought Sunday to give La Liga struggler Espanyol its first point in four outings with a 1-1 draw with Getafe at RCDE Stadium. The Chinese striker scored his first league goal since bagging one against Real Sociedad in May with a volley on the stroke of half-time as his side looked to find some form after defeats in their last three games. Before Wu’s intervention, it seemed Espanyol was in for a torturous afternoon as Getafe broke the deadlock less than three minutes into the action-packed contest, yet they clawed their way back into the game thanks to the former Shanghai SIPG star’s clinical finish. The desperate Espanyol, which lost its opening six home games, laid siege to the Getafe goal late on but Jose Bordalas’ side somehow survived, with keeper David Soria performing heroics to frustrate a couple of brilliant efforts from Wu in a frantic finale. “I’m very happy to score but unfortunately it’s not a perfect result,” said Wu. “It would be flawless if my goal could bring three points to my team. I wasted several chances to put the game to bed, so I still have room to improve.” (SD-Agencies) |
