The Kunpeng Cup, a two-day Chinese chess contest, was held last weekend at Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Golden Bay in Dapeng New Area, attracting 100 young contestants to join in.

Organized by Kaisa Golden Bay Resort, the contest invited Xu Yinchuan, a grand master of Chinese chess, as the event’s special guest.

After the first day of fierce competition, based on the contestants’ accumulative points, opponents’ points and wins, a total of 20 players successfully reached the finals and won a chance to play a match with master Xu the next day.

A parent spoke highly of the event, saying that the contest was a great experience for his child, especially since his child regards Master Xu as an idol. “The event allows my child to have a close exchange with the master, which delighted my child so much. My child is planning to attend the competition next year,” said the parent.

Yang Jiajin, a 9-year-old student from Baomin Primary School in Bao’an, ranked sixth in the competition. He said he practiced for two years, constantly participated in various contests. His father said Yang loves playing Chinese chess and spends over an hour practicing every day. “I have seen many familiar faces here. My son competed with them in other competitions. Playing Chinese chess is good for his thinking, and actually he is very good at math and ranks among the top in his grade,” said Yang’s father.

Lu Sa, director of the Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Dapeng New Area, said: “The contest has demonstrated the cultural history of Dapeng, which will promote the cultural construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and showcase the charm and influence of Chinese civilization.”

Since “The Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” was officially promulgated and implemented in February 2019, Shenzhen has been enhancing its cultural soft power by holding various cultural events.

As a representative costal vocational resort of the city, the Kaisa Golden Bay Resort has organized a series of cultural tourism events in recent years. The Chinese chess contest is held to promote traditional culture and contribute to the construction of a national civilized city from multiple angles, such as education, culture and lifestyle.

Chinese chess is in the essence of traditional Chinese culture. Shenzhen has a sound pool of participants and event-hosting experience.

The event has provided the young players with a platform for cultural exchange, which is conducive to strengthening their education in Chinese cultural.
