Rescue efforts continue as 3 missing in ground collapse
    2019-12-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A CONSTRUCTION area on a road in South China’s Guangzhou City collapsed abruptly Sunday morning, engulfing a trash truck and an electric car, and leaving three individuals still unaccounted for, said local authorities.

As of 5:00 a.m. yesterday, the municipal emergency bureau had dispatched more than 1,100 rescuers and 192 rescue vehicles for the rescue mission, Guangzhou Metro said on its social media platform.

Local traffic police confirmed that the Shahe interchange on Guangzhou Avenue that was closed for the incident has resumed normal traffic at 7:00 a.m.

According to media reports, a father and his son were on board the trash truck as the accident happened, and their family members are waiting for them at the site.

Three people were confirmed to be trapped and the rescue operations are underway, local authorities said at a press conference Sunday evening.

To prevent the hole from expanding, the hole was back-filled, local media reported.

The collapse happened at around 9:28 a.m. Sunday., and police responded to the scene at around 9:40 a.m.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Local media said the deepest part of the hole had reached nearly 38 meters, and the collapsed area had nearly doubled as of 2:00 p.m. Sunday, after two more collapses.   (CGTN)
