AIDS prevalence rate kept at low level: official
    2019-12-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINA has made progress in the prevention and treatment of AIDS, keeping its prevalence rate at a low level, according to the country’s top health authority.

AIDS transmission through blood transfusions has been basically eliminated, and transmission through intravenous drug-use and mother-to-child transmission have been effectively curbed, said the National Health Commission (NHC).

China had 958,000 people living with HIV/AIDS as of the end of October this year after 131,000 cases of new infections were reported in the first 10 months of the year, according to the NHC.

The NHC has made arrangements for combating transmission through sexual contact, the current primary mode of transmission in China, and eliminating mother-to-child transmission.

Regions of relatively high prevalence rates and deeply impoverished areas, as well as young adult and student populations, have been identified as priorities, according to the NHC.

The NHC vowed to enhance publicity and education work to raise awareness of personal health responsibility and step up the crackdown on law violations and crimes related to AIDS transmission, among other preventative and treatment measures.
