This Friday night, contemporary master Stefan Malzew will lead fans on a thrilling musical journey through a rich auditory tapestry of classical and fusion styles. The versatile German conductor and composer, notable for his attempts to broaden classical music’s audience base and for classical-jazz fusion projects, will conduct Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) and its chief trumpeter Dai Dongyu on a program that includes Malzew’s “Blue Zero,” Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s “Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major” and the “Symphony No. 1 in B-flat Minor” by English composer William Walton. A gifted composer, Malzew has created several original pieces including chamber music works, two operas, a prize-winning concerto for clarinet and orchestra, and four concertos for jazz quartet, among others. “Blue Zero,” a fantasy for a large orchestra which was commissioned by an outdoor summer music festival in 2014, instills the rhythm, harmony and melodious features of jazz into a classical orchestral form, in a way similar to Ravel’s “Bolero.” The title of the piece “Blue Zero” is also a play on words with “Bolero.” A contemporary of Beethoven,Hummel had been a piano prodigy and studied for a time with Mozart. While he wrote prolifically for his own instrument, Hummel is best known today for his only trumpet concerto, composed in 1803 for Anton Weidinger, the virtuoso of the then newly invented keyed trumpet. Dai, who graduated with full marks for his master’s degree from the College of Music Hanns Eisler in Berlin in 2017, will showcase the compellingly melodious solo part in the second movement and the jaunty, off-to-the-races trumpet theme in the finale. Showing the influence of Sibelius, particularly in its musical structure, Walton’s four-movement piece is among the best-known symphonies by British composers and has received numerous recordings since it was first completed in 1933.
