Jazz shows by intl. musicians
    2019-12-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese saxophonist Li Gaoyang will collaborate with pianist Richie Beirach, trumpeter Tim Hagans, drummer Adam Nussbaum and double bassist Gene Perla to present three jazz shows at Shenzhen Concert Hall.

Li is a wonderful player skilled in tenor saxophone and soprano saxophone with rich experience in improvising and, together with his band, has played at many international events and jazz festivals, his performance and music considered as “the closest to the original jazz” by critics. Through the years, Li has composed a considerable amount of originals covering different styles on the musical spectrum and has been lauded as a top jazz saxophone player by audience and critics alike.

Hagans has been nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best Instrumental Composition for “Box of Cannoli” on “The Avatar Sessions” in 2010, Best Contemporary Jazz Album for “Animation*Imagination” in 1999 and Best Contemporary Jazz Album for “Re-Animation” in 2000. He taught at the University of Cincinnati from 1982 to 1984 and at Berklee College of Music from 1984 to 1987.

Nussbaum has kept active in a wide variety of groups, such as Dave Liebman’s quintet, Gil Evans Orchestra, Eliane Elias/Randy Brecker Quartet, Michael Brecker’s band, Carla Bley Big Band and John Abercrombie’s organ trio. His recording debut as leader was in 2018 with The Lead Belly Project.

Beirach has studied at the Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. He has worked with Stan Getz, Chet Baker and David Liebman. Beirach’s style is influenced by Art Tatum, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and his earlier classical training. It is also individualistic with many touches all its own.

When Perla was at the Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory, he concentrated on piano before moving to double bass. He has worked with Woody Herman’s orchestra, Elvin Jones, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughan, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Don Alias and Steve Grossman. He has taught at Lehigh University and the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
