Animal novel writer shares insights on nature and life
    2019-12-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

动物小说作家黑鹤走进大冲学校畅谈“自然与生命”

The “Star Writers Coming to Campus” event held at the Nanshan Foreign Language School’s Dachong Campus has welcomed another writer. Children’s literature writer Gerileqimuge Heihe was invited to share with students and teachers about his experience of living on the grasslands and how it contributed to his writing career.

Heihe’s writings feature a unique style and distinctive themes. His focus in recent years has been on novels about animals. During the lecture, he showed pictures from his childhood in order to share with the audience what living on the grasslands is like, how human beings and animals can coexist in a harmonious and reciprocal manner, and his deep love toward nature.

He explained how his memories of childhood prompted him to begin a writing career and suggested to the students that “writing is all about your personal experiences and feelings” and that “a unique writing style really matters.”

Heihe also warned the students that not all animals are harmless to humans. For example, when confronted with a ferocious dog, instead of running away or staring at the dog, the best method of escape is to stand still and shout for help.

In an after-lecture interview, Heihe said that he hopes his writing and lectures will teach kids who grow up in cities to respect nature, revere living things, and have a deeper understanding of the eternal themes of life and nature. He added that he hopes his writings will serve to record the vanishing nomadic and hunting cultures that once prevailed in northern China.

The “Star Writers Coming to Campus” event has brought well-known writers, including Cao Wenxuan, Zhang Zhilu and Deng Kangyan, to the school to interact with students and teachers. According to school principal Du Ping, the goal of holding such on-campus reading activities is to enrich the spiritual lives of the kids and guide a happy upbringing. (Yu Yuanfan)
