Printmaking is a traditional art treasure in China. Specifically it was the art form of woodcut printing which marked the turn of a new page in the country’s printmaking. Nowadays, printmaking courses have become a highlight of campus education. In 2012, Li Xiaohong, an art teacher at Nanshan Primary School Attached to Beijing Normal University, launched a fun children’s printmaking club, driven by his passion for art creation. At the program’s inception, it lacked adequate equipment, such as the printmaking machine, print room or drying racks. However, the teacher and students overcame these difficulties and persisted in creating prints in other ways. “Everything originates from their interest. With support from the school’s leaders, we have successfully created an atmosphere for printmaking, overcoming difficulties and fulfilling a sense of achievement,” recalled Li. From creating a starter print room to owning a professional printmaking classroom fully equipped for printing and drying, the printmaking course at the school has been attracting more and more students and nurturing the kids with traditional arts and culture. Through various festivals and activities organized by the school and off-campus organizations, printmaking has made a name for the school, becoming one of its most eye-catching and award-winning offerings.
