Kung fu actor to headline stage drama
    2019-12-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WU YUE, who was cast in the role of tai chi master Wan Zonghua in the blockbuster “Ip Man 4,” which is currently being screened in theaters, will headline a stage drama in town this week. “Da Zhai Men” (“Bai’s Family Mansion”), adapted from a successful Chinese TV series of the same title that first went on-air in 2001, will play two nights Tuesday and Wednesday at Shenzhen Poly Theater.

Now streaming on Netflix, this Chinese period drama series follows the fortunes of a prominent merchant family engaged in traditional Chinese medicine during the waning years of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1911). The affairs of this family of doctor-pharmacists are intimately linked with the social upheavals of the time as well as the conflicts that inevitably emerge in a large upper class family. Running 72 episodes, the show tells the story of several generations of the Bai family until the time of World War II, when the Chinese were forced into a resistance against the Japanese invasion. Comparable in scope and production value to such recent titles as “Downton Abbey,” this show hit a record viewership of nearly 18 percent among all TV programs on Chinese State television in 2001.

The current stage drama production, directed by original series director Guo Baochang, casts Wu in the leading role of Bai Jingqi. Born in April 1976, the actor is best known for playing kung fu heroes in films and TV series. A graduate of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing and an actor of the National Theater of China, Wu will portray the role of Bai first as an 18-year-old lad who then goes through the ups and downs of life until he is an octogenarian.(Debra Li)
