Shenzhen Museum

Specimens of rare animals, plants and minerals and several plates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey telescope are on display until Feb. 5. Ancient relics from various countries along the ancient Silk Road are also on display until March 29. And a batch of Song Dynasty (960-1279) porcelains are on display until March 8.

Nanshan Museum

Ancient relics from Central China’s Henan Museum are on display until April 20 and Chinese landscape paintings created by masters in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the early 20th century are also on display until Feb. 9. And volumes from the Yongle Encyclopedia, the world’s largest ancient encyclopedia, are on display until March 8. Entry is free.

Cao Wenxuan

Chinese novelist Cao Wenxuan, best known for his works of children’s literature, will meet Shenzhen readers at Shenzhen Book City’s Longgang Store this Saturday. In 2016, Cao was announced as the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for children’s writing, being the first Chinese author to ever receive the award.

Time: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 18

Venue: Shenzhen Book City’s Longgang Store, Longgang District (龙岗区深圳书城龙岗城)

Snack market

While most supermarkets tend to sell more traditional snacks such as nuts, plum preserves and candies at this time of the year, the snack market at Eslite Spectrum Shenzhen features new favorites, such as crisp-dried crab snacks, biscuits in mustard and honey flavors, Guizhou chili potato chips, and green tea-flavored white chocolates with dried strawberries, to name a few.
