Renowned Chinese TV host Zhao Zhongxiang dies
    2020-01-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RENOWNED Chinese TV host Zhao Zhongxiang, who was famous for narrating TV documentary series “Animal World” and hosting China’s most-watched entertainment show “Spring Festival Gala,” died of illness Thursday morning, his son announced on the TV presenter’s social media Thursday. He was 78.

In a statement released on Weibo, Zhao’s son said the veteran anchorman sought medical care at the end of 2019 after feeling unwell. He was diagnosed with cancer, which had already spread by the time of diagnosis.

Born in 1942 in Hebei Province, Zhao got his start as a news anchor at Beijing TV Station in 1959 and interviewed U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1979 during Deng Xiaoping’s historical visit to the United States. Starting in 1981 he narrated popular documentary series “Animal World” on China Central Television (CCTV), China’s national TV station, and from 1984 to 2000, he had hosted CCTV’s “Spring Festival Gala” almost every year on the eve of Chinese New Year.

Thanks to his gentle and rich voice and professional and tender style, he was a household TV star in China for several decades. Many Chinese audience members said they grew up hearing Zhao’s familiar voice.

Zhao was also known for speaking out on environmental issues such as the protection of endangered tigers and the noise pollution caused by firecrackers.(SD News)
