SHENZHEN has confirmed a total of nine coronavirus-related pneumonia cases yesterday, Guangdong health commission said.

The first confirmed patient was a 66-year-old man, who visited his relatives in Wuhan on Dec. 29. He developed fever and fatigue Jan. 3 and sought treatment after returning to Shenzhen the next day. He tested positive for the virus Saturday.

Eight new cases were confirmed in the city yesterday.

Guangdong reported 13 new cases yesterday, including eight in Shenzhen, three in Zhuhai, one in Zhanjiang and one in Huizhou. No death was reported. Four patients are in serious conditions and two critical.

Shenzhen launched a prevention and control mechanism following the report of the case. It has started body temperature monitoring at the airport, ferry terminals, railway stations and bus stations and strengthened case screening.

Another eight people who had close contact with the patient are under medical observation.

Medical experts remind that citizens should pay attention to maintaining indoor air circulation, washing hands frequently, avoiding closed and airless public places and crowded places, and to wear masks if necessary.

Residents who develop a fever and show symptoms of respiratory tract infection are advised to seek medical treatment in a timely manner.
