TWO vegetable samples, namely snow peas and Chinese kale (cabbage mustard), sold at the Rainbow shopping mall in Pingshan and the Gonghe wet market in Bao’an, respectively, were found having excessive pesticide residue, according to a test result released by the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision and Regulation Bureau. The bureau tested a total of 22 pork products and 73 vegetable samples across the city last November. The result suggested that all the pork products qualified. The pesticide residue was identified as carbendazol and chlorfenapyr. It is said that carbendazol is a kind of fungicide, which will increase the risk of developing a liver tumor. Chlorfenapyr is said to be toxic to hydrobios like fish. The human body will accumulate certain amounts of pesticide residue over the long-term intake of vegetables and fruits with pesticide residue at levels exceeding the legal limit. Pesticide residue will do harm to nerve cells, or even lead to the death of the central nervous system, when circulated through the blood, which will then lower immunity and trigger diseases, said the report.
